An original OpenUK Competition 2019 was held in groups to promote open source learning. Groups of 4 kids collaborate to build a MiniMU Glove - a make-it-yourself kit. This is a collaborative project in teams of 4.

OpenUK Competition - due to COVID-19 - now offered a 10 week fun animated course from end of the May with a final competition in September. This new UK competition for kids at Key Stage 3 or equivalent replaced our original competition due to the Pandemic and inspired the development of our kids course.

The competition is based on assembling and using MiniMU gloves in a collaborative project in teams of 4.The MiniMU kit is a make-it-yourself musical glove for children aged 8 and above, and based on the MiMU Gloves designed by multiple Grammy award-winning musician Imogen Heap.

To take part in the competition, teams registered by 17 May and were provided with a MinMU glove kit per child, free of charge with priority access to the OpenUK Kids Course. During the Course Kids made their glove kits, and they are now participating in the fun animated lessons which will be released for the wider population in August as part of the OpenUK Digital Kids Camp.  The Course is a Phase One Winner in the Gnome Community Engagement Challenge.

The Open Source UK Kids’ Competition: The contest aims to expand awareness of the value that open technology can bring to individuals and society.

The competition and supporting courses are designed to help equip students with the skills, knowledge and experience in Open Technology to begin their learning path around the meaning of “Open”, using the UK designed MiniMU glove kit, inspired by Imogen Heap’s MiMU glove and BBC micro:bit, to kick off a skills learning process that will help the UK meet the challenges of tomorrow’s technology and build future leadership in Open Source Software, Open Source Hardware and Open Data. For questions about the competition email admin@openuk.uk

The 2019 competition started its 3 rounds in September with the 48 registered teams of 4 kids who collaborate online to create 3, 1-2 minute long videos on their experiences including:

  • a diary

  • their creative use of the glove

  • the importance of open technology

As part of the awards pupils will learn more about open technologies and provide their responses on the value that open source offers to them.

The contest aims to expand awareness of the value that open technology can bring to individuals and society, and is being supported by Red Hat, Inc., the world’s leading provider of open source solutions and GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform.
